Every scent event is unique, but if you are thinking of coming to something and aren’t sure what it’s going to be like, here are a few of the questions I get most often:
DO I HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT FRAGRANCE?
No, you don’t have to know a thing. Each event has a mixture, from those who are seriously into scent and probably have a bottle – or fifty – lying around at home, to people dragged along by a friend and who end up having a good time. It’s a bit like a restaurant: some people are hardcore foodies while others just want something tasty. The events aren’t like a test where you’re asked what’s in a fragrance; ingredients is only a part of it.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT LIKE?
Think a mixture between a talk (with much raucousness / audience interaction / chatting), a masterclass and a social club. Some events involve more production or a novelty format, and this will come across in the promo copy….
WHAT ARE THE THEMES?
The themes are what makes the events different. They’re wide ranging and could take in anything from pop culture history to ghost stories or Roman mythology. You can see the vault for some our past events. Often I develop new content for special events and private commissions, so ask if you’re organising something for which a bespoke idea would work best.
CAN MEN COME?
So someone called me out on this heading which I didn’t realise could be read in another way. I should probably word it: ‘Do men attend?’ Absolutely. Admittedly some events, like the 1920s Vintage Scent Session, are rather heavy in oestrogen, but most are designed to appeal to everyone.
CAN PETS COME?
No. Though if we’re talking about a pet leopard I might make an exception.
CAN I BOOK A GROUP ONTO AN EVENT?
You can, as long as there are enough tickets available. If your group is large, it might be best to get in touch about a private event.
Lots of people come with a friend or two, but equally it’s a very welcome environment for attending on your own. The good thing about scent is you don’t have to make small talk with strangers; there’s the subject to discuss.
WHAT PERFUMES DO YOU USE?
Generally speaking, in any event the scents could range from expensive and rare, through to mass-market.
Perfumes are chosen for being right with a theme, whatever the price or level of exclusivity. I never get paid or sponsored to feature perfumes (the exception would be if I’m hosting an event in partnership with a brand, and this is always clear). Sometimes I can call a scent in for an event for free, but often I buy a bottle.
DO YOU SELL PERFUMES AT THE EVENTS?
No. Though I do sell my book! Sometimes I host events in venues where you can buy perfume (like Les Senteurs for the Vintage Scent Sessions), and I’m never going to dissuade the purchase of a new scent. However, I’m not there to sell to you, and I certainly don’t make commission. The whole point is to enjoy without being pressured at the end to get something. And if you hate one of the perfumes incorporated into an event, I don’t care at all.
